Push For Boys and Girls Club in Lincolnton is No Child’s Play

By Seth Mabry

LINCOLNTON-Shaun Newton and Ryan Applebee would not be here today if it were not for their involvement in the Boys and Girls Club during their younger years.

"Shaun and I both came from at-risk homes," Applebee said. "We found a safe harbor in the Boys and Girls Club."

Newton, who grew up in Brunswick, GA, and Applebee, who hails from Aurora, NY, needed a catalyst at a young age to keep them on the proper path to manhood.

After graduating from high school, they both enlisted in the Marine Corps, which encouraged them to become leaders and step up and take charge.

But it was not until recently that Newton and Applebee were introduced to one another.

Newton, who has been a detention office for the Haven Crouse Detention Center and is currently a case worker for the Lincoln County Department of Social Services, saw the need for a Boys and Girls Club in Lincoln County.

"I would get to see a lot of same individuals that were repeat offenders," said Newton. "If they had some structure in their lives at a younger age, then things might have been different for them."

In July 2011, Newton started the process of bringing a Boys and Girls Club to Lincolnton. Once complete, the Boys and Girls Club of Lincoln County will be recognized as its own charter instead of operating under the umbrella of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Gaston. This move will allow the club to set up satellite units across Lincoln County.

But Newton, who is director of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Gaston-Lincoln Unit, could not tackle the task of making the club its own charter by himself.  Newton needed someone to handle the technical side of things

That is where Ryan Applebee came into play.

"The timing was perfect," Newton said. "Ryan's leadership and his willingness to do more helps me sleep better at nights now."

Applebee concurs with Newton.

"I showed up at the right time. Shaun knew a lot about the programs, but I helped with the infrastructure, operations and 501c3 applications."

Applebee, who is an employee for Duke Energy at McGuire Nuclear Station, is the vice-president of the Boys and Girls Club of Great Gaston-Lincoln Unit.

He hopes to see the same results in Lincolnton which can currently be found in the Greater Gaston Unit.

"Of the 800 members of the Greater Gaston club, we have zero gang members and zero teen pregnancies because the programs and the set plans," Applebee said. "Also, 81% of the members who attend Power Hour on a regular basis are now A-B students."

Newton also sees the importance of the programs offered by the club.

"Power Hour is where a student focuses strictly on their homework with no outside activities until they are complete. This also helps the school systems with recent budget cuts and teacher assistant layoffs. The students learn to take pride in completing their homework," Newton said. "It also frees up more time for the parents to interact with their kids once they get home."

Other programs include Money Matter, which teaches financial responsibility, Passport to Manhood, which promotes and teaches responsibility to club boys ages 11 to 14, and Smart Moves, a prevention/education program addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity.

According to Newton, these are values and life skills that used to be taught to teens by their parents, but times have changed and many of these juveniles go without this education.

"We live in a society of instant gratification. Families don't cook and sit around a dinner table, they just grab McDonald's. We have lost that family bond."

But instant gratification played somewhat of a role in deciding on the Oaklawn School building to house the club's Lincolnton operation.

"We wanted to make an immediate impact with our location. There are 65 children under the age of 17 in the vicinity of Oaklawn," Newton said. "These are the kids that need us the most. These are the ones we could lose the first (to gangs or drugs)."

But the Boys and Girls Club will need to raise more than $500,000 to renovate the school before it can move in, which mostly comes from grants and donations.

Newton refers to the contributions as "Paying it forward" as the reward will be reaped tentatively in 2014.

Once complete, the club will welcome any Lincoln County child ages 6-17 for only $20/month. If someone cannot afford the monthly fee, arrangements can be made so your child can still attend.

"It doesn't matter if you are a millionaire or homeless, no child will ever be turned away," Applebee said.
