Lincolnton Lions, Lawndale Lions, and The Yokebillies Team Up For Fun Night At Camp Dogwood

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 06:56 AM PDT

What does a time machine,Lions, and Yokebillies have in common? On Wednesday, June 20th, 80 blind/visually impaired campers, Lincolnton and Lawndale Lions, volunteers, and camp counselors eventually learned its significant. Coincidentally, campers, counselors, Lions and entertainers attending, visiting, and volunteering would have thought that they had entered a time warp machine based on the number of people wearing tie-dyed shirts, beads, Peace symbols, and bandannas.

Instead of traveling backwards in time to the late 1960′s and 1970′s, each week, Lion Susan King, Camp Director at Camp Dogwood, chooses weekly theme. Her weekly theme for July 17th through June 23rd was  “Peace, Love, and Hippies”. To encourage  more volunteerism, participation, and visits  from Lions Clubs throughout the state at Camp Dogwood, King has scheduled  13 Wednesday night cookouts with different themes.

In keeping with LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL motto’s “WE SERVE”, The Lincolnton Lions Club and The Lawndale Lions Clubs  teamed up  for an unique opportunity to meet, to  socialize,to  entertain and to serve our blind/visually impaired campers, and to  give our members  up close and personal look @ Camp Dogwood. Each summer, the Lincolnton and Lawndale Lions Clubs sponsor blind/visually impaired adults from Lincoln and Cleveland County, respectively, to Camp Dogwood.

The therapeutic recreational facility, owned and operated by the North Carolina Lions, is located along the shores of Lake Norman in Sherrills Ford in Catawba County. Camp Dogwood provides 80 blind/visually impaired adult campers one of 12 week camping experiences by utilizing Lake Norman’s waterfront for boating, fishing, swimming, skiing, turbing, along with arts/crafts, putt-putt golf, field trips for bowling, horseback riding, and shopping. The ratio of staff to campers is one to five. Camp Dogwood’s staff serve as sighted guides and assure campers have a week of fun and fellowship. In addition to a full time camp director and cafeteria manager, Camp Dogwood’s staff includes college students as camp counselors,a registered nurse to monitor their medical conditions and volunteers.

Those  Lincolnton Lions volunteering included  Past District Governor Neal Alexander, 1st Vice President; Lion Billie Allison, Membership Chair; Lion Pat Davis, Lion Bonnie Edward, Secretary; Lion Emma Houser, Lion Faye Poovey,Board Member; Lion Sara Singletary, Lion Robert Tomlinson, Board Member; Lion Shannon Wingate. Lincolnton Lions spouses or daughters- Calvin Allison, Michelle Green, and Bill Houser. To the surprise of many Lions present, Past District Governor Bob Spencer, the Executive Director of North Carolina Lions Foundation, and Past President of Lincolnton Lions Club, was attending as blind camper. Those Lawndale Lions volunteering include  Lion Henry Griffin, President, Lion Sharon Martin, Secretary; Lion Willen Griffin; Lion Bernice Hester; Lion Bessie Hester; Lion Robert Hester, and Lion Lois Schenck.

Due to extreme  outdoor temperatures, the cook out was moved to the dining hall in main lodge.  After blind/visually impaired campers, camp staff, volunteers, Lincolnton and Lawndale had been eaten  hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, homemade desserts, lemonade and tea, they went to Cates Room to hear  Neil Furr and The Yokebillies, a gospel-rock-country band, from Statesville. In addition playing an assortment of familiar songs, Neil Furr played some of  his original songs, and  shared a variety of jokes. The Yokebillies, usually consist of 5 members, which  supports  Yokefellows, a prison ministry in Iredell County. According to Neil, two of our members had a previous engagement on Wednesday night due to their being ministers. At the conclusion of their performance, the Lincolnton Lions Club presented The Yokebillies a $100 check for them to use with their ministry.
