Can E-Books and Libraries Coexist?
3:29:06 AMBob Al-Greene

Print -- literature, journalism, you name it -- has experienced an extended obituary over the last decade, alongside the rise of digital media.

But a recent Pew study found that even as sales of e-readers like Nook and Kindle grow swiftly, young people still frequent libraries more than you might think, and print books remain popular. Even the most plugged-in lit fans are not ready to abandon print as a dead medium. In fact, e-book readers consume more books annually, no matter the format.

Facebook Now Lets Users Create Repeat Events From the Past
2:52:56 AMAnita Li

Facebook built a new feature that lets users create a repeat event, company engineer Bob Baldwin announced Monday.

Members of the social network can now go to any past event that they hosted or attended, and replicate a new, similar event.

"It'll copy the details into a new event (which you can preview and edit before posting) and invite your friends from the past event," Baldwin wrote on his Facebook Timeline.

Rather than going back to square one, the feature will make it easier for users to fill in an event's recurrent details -- useful for monthly trivia nights or weekly study groups, for example.

Watch What Happens When Guys and Girls Reverse Roles at the Bar
1:29:56 AMAnita Li

With music pumping and drinks flowing, the bar scene is full of men on the prowl for women -- or so the stereotype goes.

One YouTube video reverses these clichéd gender roles, by imagining what it would be like if "guys and girls swapped roles at the bar." The result is a hilarious, if not entirely accurate, portrayal of the courtship dance between men and women

Since going online Tuesday, the video has gone viral, collecting more than 2,000 views.

Do you think the video is accurate or off-base? Tell us in the comments below.

This 'Transformer' Robot Can Shape Shift Into Almost Anything
12:58:58 AMEric Larson

MIT researchers say they've created a transformer-like robot device that can take on almost any shape imaginable

The contraption, which is roughly the size of a caterpillar, is made of metal rings and strips (pictured below) and designed to twist like a protein. Inside, there's a small motor that's able to hold its position without power -- similar to the beastly electromagnets used to lift cars in scrap yards, where a strong magnet is paired with a weaker one, TG Daily reports.

USC Email Gaffe Rubs Salt in Wounds of Failed Football Season
Tuesday, December 04, 2012 10:58 PMSam Laird

The University of Southern California Trojans entered this college football season riding high. The squad was ranked first in the nation in preseason Top 25 polls. Its golden boy quarterback Matt Barkley graced the legendary cover of Sports Illustrated. Young, cocky coach Lane Kiffin appeared ready to finally fulfill the program's vast expectations of him

Then everything fell apart. The team struggled to play well, lost crucial games and was marred by allegations of cheating while losing its biggest game of the season. The Trojans didn't even make the Pac-12 Conference championship game, something that surprised most college-sports observers, as the team was considered a shoo-in before the season began

If History's Greatest Artists Used Microsoft Paint...
Tuesday, December 04, 2012 10:32 PMAmanda Wills

When Mike Licht sees a classic piece of art, he also sees a perfect opportunity to insert an unexpected dash of wit.

The writer's Flickr stream is filled with iPads, fried chicken and PC laptops pasted into 100-plus-year-old paintings. Even though the gadget add-ons don't belong in these classic works of art, they somehow fit in a kooky sort of way. Mrs. Duffee reading a Kindle on her striped sofa? It works.

Licht doesn't use Photoshop. He sticks to his old standby, Microsoft Paint. And, yes, you could argue that using such a basic program is limiting, and the results are elementary. But perhaps it's actually perfect -- a quirky nod to the "classical" theme

This dino popped out of dark alleys, out of the back of the truck, and even tried a "ding-dong-ditch," all while a camera crew watched and chuckled at the responses. Some people were terrified, most screamed out expletives, and a few were unfazed enough to give the costume a friendly pat.

The video was created by Roman Atwood, who posts many other prank videos, including one of a fake prison break.

The Death Star was the weapon of choice in Star Wars for Darth Vader and the Empire in a galaxy far, far away. But if the U.S. is going to beef up its defense, why not with a superlaser that can destroy planets with a single beam?

At the same time that shoppers are nabbing deals online, they're also shopping in-store and comparing prices. Brick-and-mortar stores aren't going anywhere. Shoppers are using their smartphones to make in-store experiences even better.

Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org, tells Mashable that for consumers, shopping in-store or in-app is not an either/or choice.

Dyson's Radical Plan to Combine a Sink With a Hand Dryer
Tuesday, December 04, 2012 7:06 PMPete Pachal

Washing your hands is a broken process, according to Dyson. First you use a sink to pour water over your hands, then walk over to a towel dispenser or air dryer to dry them off. What madness is this?

Okay, it's not misery and bedlam, but there may be room for improvement, and Dyson has an idea on that score: Why not combine an air dryer with a sink, so you don't even have to move to (or worse, wait for) a separate unit to dry your hands?

That's the device Dyson envisions in this patent application, spotted by PhysOrg, for a "dual-purpose fixture for a sink or wash basin, incorporating both a water tap and a hand dryer." It's actually not a bad idea, and not just for convenience. On the website for its Airblade hand dryer, Dyson cites data that says every paper towel generates half an ounce of carbon emissions.

Mars Science Laboratory will use the same framework as Curiosity for the next rover's development and design. The agency says this will help keep costs and risks low. The mission fits within the five-year budget plan in the president's Fiscal Year 2013 budget request and is contingent on future appropriations.

Dad Builds Drone to Walk Son to Bus Stop
Tuesday, December 04, 2012 5:12 PMLorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai

Technology has completely changed the way parents can take care of their children. When I was a kid, there weren't even cellphones, now, there are webcams that automatically send email or cellphone notifications whenever something happens in the house. There are cars that can transmit their position back to an iPhone -- especially useful for parents of teen drivers. In other words, it's easier than ever to keep an eye on your kids

Paul Wallich, a contributing editor at IEEE Spectrum has taken it to a whole another level, assembling a quadcopter DIY drone that can follow his kid to the bus stop. It all started as a fantasy. "I walk my grade-school-age son 400 meters down the hill to the bus stop. Last winter, I fantasized about sitting at my computer while a camera-equipped drone followed him overhead.
" He decided he'd build it himself
