First Mobile Phone Call Was Placed Exactly 40 Years Ago

On April 3, 1973 — exactly 40 years from today — Motorola employee Marty Cooper made the first mobile phone call. Marty used a Motorola DynaTAC to call Bell Labs (then a division of AT&T), reportedly saying "I'm ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end." The device that Marty used to place the call was a prototype which would later become the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x.

If you are a Tibetan activist, it looks more and more like you probably shouldn't use Android phones. Last week, Kaspersky Labs uncovered the first Trojan virus targeting Tibetan and Uyghur activists. On Monday, another report points to state-sponsored Chinese hackers spying on Tibetans using a compromised version of a mobile messaging app and probably some help from the Chinese government.

Apple Starting Production on Next iPhone This Quarter

Apple reportedly plans on starting production on its newest iPhone this quarter. According to the Wall Street Journal, the phone will look and feel similar to Apple’s iPhone 5, with small spec bumps under the hood. The Journal also claims Apple is working on a lower-cost iPhone, made of a different — perhaps colored — material than the current iPhone. WSJ sources claim that the next phone will launch this summer.

HTC One to Launch on AT&T, Sprint April 19

AT&T and Sprint will both launch the HTC One on April 19, the carriers said in separate announcements. Preorders begin this week. Sprint will begin taking preorders for the phone Friday, April 5, while AT&T will let its customers buy one a day early, on April 4. On both carriers, a 32GB HTC One costs $199.99 with a two-year contract.

China on Apple's Apology: 'Better Late Than Never'

Apple CEO Tim Cook's apology to Chinese customers over the company's warranty policy has gotten a seal of approval from China's state-run media. Two of China's largest newspapers, the Communist party-run People's Daily and its sister tabloid, the Global Times, both offered words of praise for Cook's statement that posted on Apple's Chinese website April 1.
