#FunFriday: For the Love of Marketing Books

If you haven't figured it out yet, we're pretty much a bunch of marketing geeks over here. We love our apps, memes and viral videos and we're not afraid to show it. So, for this edition of #FunFriday, we decided to give you a peek inside our FeedBlitz book vault.

Wait! This is #FunFriday and we're reviewing marketing books?! Absolutely. That's because these books – all books, for that matter – are FUN. And informative. And in some cases way ahead of the curve. We recommend you check them out for yourself, but here's our take in the meantime.

Marketing in the Round Book

Marketing in the Round by Gini Dietrich and Geoff Livingston

If you haven't read this book yet … why the heck not? In a nutshell, this marketing masterpiece walks you through crafting and rethinking your marketing strategy. It breaks down the departmental silos towering over us for ages, and provides practical, step-by-step advice on how to take your brand to the next level.

Gone are the days of each department operating independently without communicating and collaborating with each other. What we like about this book, is it explains what you need to do to market effectively, and what mindsets will need to be changed to move forward in your organization.

What we love about Marketing in the Round is Gini and Geoff don't just explain; they give you practical tools, assessments and assignments, to apply what you've learned right away. Our copy literally has scribbles and highlights all over it!

Contagious

Contagious by Jonah Berger

Why do behaviors, products and ideas catch on? What's the magic sauce for going viral? If you haven't personally been asked either of these questions, you've probably at least thought them yourself. Every day there's a new viral video or trend that we need to catch up on.

We love Contagious because it tackles the issue of what really makes things popular. It breaks 'going viral' down to reveal the science behind word-of-mouth and social media. It also raises the question, "Can you make anything contagious?" You'll have to read it to find the answer …

Content Chemistry

Content Chemistry by Andy Crestodina

Today, being in marketing requires an understanding of not only what search engine optimization (SEO) is, but also how to best incorporate it within your marketing efforts. More than that, marketing requires a greater understanding of how content drives engagement and sales.

We love this book because Andy skillfully outlines how to wear your content marketing hat, and incorporate SEO without boring your readers to tears. SEO can get technical fast but Andy keeps things simple and easy to follow with illustrations and step-by-step guides to topics like Google Analytics, Google Authorship, blog post optimization and more. Don't get us wrong, this isn't just a guide to SEO. It's about thinking like a marketer and making your content work for you.

Andy’s also a charismatic, easy going, funny guy, and those traits shine through in his writing.

Control Alt Delete: Reboot Your Business. Reboot Your Life. by Mitch Joel

Mitch Joel is a unique guy. Named one of the most influential authorities on blog marketing in the world, he’s recognized as a communications and interactive expert, yet he still sees the world through a somewhat punk aesthetic. His latest book explores a looming business apocalypse due to the fundamentally changed way we do business today, and will continue to in the future. Joel outlines five key movements in business that have already happened – movements few businesses seem to have acted upon (you’ll have to read the book to find out what they are!). Remain static, stodgy and status quo? You’re going down. Prepared to reboot – so to speak? You have a chance at making it.

We also love this book because much of what he’s talking about can be applied to your personal life as well – heck, none of us can say our lives haven’t changed with all of this new technology at our fingertips. Joel has achieved his own unique work-life balance equation, and shares his philosophies on work, life, music, and art. Trust us, this isn’t a book about gloom and doom, but it might be the kick in the backside you need to reboot and rebuild.

We hope you enjoyed peeking into our book vault. What are you reading? We'd love to hear your recommendations. Just leave a comment below or visit our Facebook page and share the link to your favorite book on our wall.

Editor’s Note: Gini Dietrich is founder and CEO of Arment Dietrich, the Chicago communications firm currently working with FeedBlitz.
