Q&A from the "Migrate from FeedBurner" Webinar

Q&A from the “Migrate from FeedBurner” Webinar

Last Wednesday FeedBlitz hosted its first Wednesday Webinar covering the process of migrating from FeedBurner to FeedBlitz – the webcast recordings and slides are available here.

Here are questions from the live chat, edited and occasionally extended for clarity and change of venue:

Q: Why do you say you will retain the majority of your audience (in the migration)? Why not all of your audience?
A: Your audience is not entirely human. Bots and crawlers also visit your feed and raise your stats. As these are not sentient beings, they will not take action when given the “This feed has moved” message. Almost everyone with a pulse will follow the directive.

Q: In the process of the feed migration from FeedBurner, is it possible to merge two feeds together?
A: Yes, there are two ways you can approach this:

1. If you mean two feeds with different content, you can use the splice feature to add any RSS feed into another.

2. If you mean that you have two feeds with different FeedBurner URIs or extensions (that personalized bit at the end), FeedBlitz will send all of those subscribers to the same source feed. If you have two FeedBurner feeds with different sources, but identical sources, you create two new feeds at FeedBlitz and redirect the less desired extension / URI to the favored URI. This will bring all of your subscribers into one easily tallied feed.

Q: Why would there be any loss of email subscribers if you have your [FeedBurner] login?
A: It’s all in how the metrics are calculated. We do not count pending or bounced email addresses as active. These different metrics generally result in some bad addresses being left behind. FeedBlitz does everything it can to ensure all of your active subscribers are brought over, but not counting the bad ones lowers your bottom line.  Additionally we also won’t add addresses that we already think are bad or have opted completely out of FeedBlitz.

Q: What ads can be placed in my feed?

A: FeedBlitz has an adnetwork that allows publishers to monetize both their feeds and their newsletters. The RSS option is under your feed’s Settings and the newsletter is under My Account | Ad Revenue Share

Q: What is the name of the FeedBlitz feed plugin for WordPress?
A: FeedBlitz FeedSmart

Q: Where is the information on configuring a feed for a headline widget?
A: The headline widget is under the Promote tab of your feed’s dashboard.

Q: Can I embed the mailing list’s form code anywhere?
A: Yes you can embed it in a page on your site, in a pop-up, or as a new page. The options are under Form Code on each mailing list’s dashboard.  We also have links for email signatures, QR codes for mobile users.

Q: Does FeedBlitz work with Bloglovin?
A: FeedBlitz feeds can be subscribed to with ANY reader.

Q: Can you change the yellow color of the FeedBurner migration notice?
A: Yes, just edit the CSS / HTML in the code under FeedBurner Migration and Compatibility in the settings of your feed.

Q: Can you change the timing of when your newsletter is mailed?
A: Yes, it’s under the settings of each newsletter. We recommend testing thoroughly to figure out which mailing schedule works best with your audience.

Q: Can you set your feed to partial?
A: Yes, this is under the per-post section of a feed’s settings. FeedBlitz uses smart truncation that preserves images and links, so please set your website to deliver the full feed to FeedBlitz and let us handle the truncation. Most blog platforms strip images and links in a partial feed.

Q: My posts are image heavy, how will they render in email?
A: Our easy template is responsive and allows you to customize the colors and basic layout all while maintaining an optimal mobile and browser experience.

Q: Can I use FeedBlitz for more than one site?
A: Absolutely, we arrange your dashboard so mailing lists and feeds are organized by site.  You can have multiple sites in a single FeedBlitz account.

Q: If I choose to migrate only RSS now, will I have the ability to bring over email subscriptions later?
A: Absolutely, you can import subscribers at any time (provided it is in compliance with our TOS)
