FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

By Phil Hollows

FeedBlitzThe week after CES always has the tech world aflutter as they try to make sense of the newest tech trends and product releases on display in Las Vegas.

Big companies make big moves and try to make waves with an acqui-hire, or by laying the groundwork for some truly disruptive technology.

There’s always lots to analyze, get excited about, or, alternatively, shrug off as a tech miss.

We won’t give you a play-by-play recap of CES because that’ll just take too long — and who has time to read that much on Friday anyhow?

As is our tradition here at Feedblitz, the aim of these Friday posts is to keep things easy yet interesting. So with that in mind, here’s a little roundup of tidbits and big stories from the world of tech.

Three Interesting Developments in Tech This Week

There’s always a fair bit of news coming out of Silicon Valley and Las Vegas after a trade show the size of CES that’s bound to catch our eye, but if we’ve missed something worth covering, be sure and let us know in the comments below.

It might just be highlighted when we rewind a future week.

The Connected Car Revolution

The new frontier for tech integration — well, it’s actually been happening for a while now — is the cockpit of your car. The biggest trend in connected car technology is voice-to-text. Imagine driving down the road and having your emails read to you as they come directly through your car’s speakers. It certainly says something about keeping us more focused on watching traffic ahead, instead of reaching for our mobile as soon as we hear the notification tone that a new text or email has arrived.

Right now, it seems like technology like this could be more of a distraction than a smooth integration.

Wearable Tech Continues to Dominate

Wearable tech covers everything: From activity trackers like Fitbit and Jawbone’s UP, to the intriguing but somewhat creepy Google Glass. This sector has seen lots of growth over the past few years with lots of newcomers.

The most unusual entry in wearable tech might be the Sensoria Fitness Socks. Sensors in the material, plus a Bluetooth anklet, track steps, distance, weight distribution between your feet, strike pattern, and cadence. For the serious runner, it’s a pretty nifty gadget and another datapoint for you Quantified Self folks.

Smarter Cooking

Have you ever been driving to work and realized that you forgot to switch on the slow cooker? Belkin has solved that problem with a WeMo-enabled slow cooker. Via the WeMo app, you’ll be able to turn the appliance on and off, adjust the cooking temperature, and check the status of your dish as the day ticks on. Boom! Pot roast.

That does it for this week! Enjoy your weekend!
