FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

By Phil Hollows

FeedBlitzWell, we’ve made it through another week and Friday is here again.

There were some spectacularly provocative posts coming out of the blogosphere this week. In fact, paring down the list to just four articles that absolutely demand your attention wasn’t easy, but we’ve managed to do it.

As always, if we’ve missed one that you think deserves consideration and a close read, let us know in the comments below.

The Decay and Fall of Guest Blogging

Google’s Matt Cutts went swinging for the fences in this post declaring the (welcome) death of guest blogging for backlinks. The lesson: if you’re pitching blog posts to the big players in your industry just for a little Google juice, you’re missing the point of guest blogging entirely.

Email At the Heart of Social Ads

There are few people who know email marketing better than Chris Penn. As many marketers know, you live and die by your database. Using the launch of his new eBook as an example, Chris walks you through Facebook’s Custom Audiences tool and the role email plays in the retargeting networks of the future.

Getting Authorship to Work: A Moz.com Case Study

Google Authorship continues to play an increasingly important role in content marketing, but getting it set up properly isn’t always a walk in park, as Ruth Barr explains in this Moz post.

She highlights some key take aways that you can implement immediately.

For The Right Content Marketing Answers, Ask The Right Content Strategy Questions

Rebecca Lieb, an analyst at the Altimeter Group, takes a close look at the evolving landscape of content marketing and – more importantly – content strategy. She stresses the importance of asking the right questions when developing strategy that always, always supports specific business goals.

The “right” mix of original, user-generated, and curated content won’t look the same for everyone.

Readability versus The Robot: The Flesch Reading Test

Blogging always walks that fine line between optimizing for the human (i.e. your reader) and the robot. All this talk about natural language and readibility can get a little confusing, but this handy little primer from Holly Hartzenberg walks you through the popular Yoast SEO plugin’s Flesch Reading Test and provides some tips about effectively writing for humans while still satisfying Google’s webcrawlers.

While readability is an important factor for search rankings, Holly reminds us writing for your audience is always a good idea.

That’s it for this week. Enjoy your weekend, and play safe!
