FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

By Phil Hollows

FeedBlitzThere's hope, there's hope!

Not only is today Friday, which is always a pleasure to see no matter how much you love the work you do, for most of us here in the U.S. it's Daylight Savings Time weekend!

And, after the winter we've had (and, let's face it, are still having), being able to "spring ahead" this weekend will bring us an extra hour of much needed daylight – and that wonderful feeling that our elusive spring, might actually, finally, be 'in the air'.

That said, Friday also brings another edition of FeedBlitz's Rewind the Week, where we drop a handy dandy selection of some of the best digital news from the past week into your inbox. Today we bring you – the tech edition!

So, without further ado, let's begin.

Google Glass and Common Courtesy

TheVerge.com (and many, many other outlets) had a lot of fun reporting on Google's attempt to reign in some of the participants in their "Explorer Program". “Our Glass Explorer community, which consists of people from all walks of life, actively participates in shaping the future of Glass,” Google says.

Reading a bit like a list you might see on a kindergarten classroom wall, their list of etiquette "dos and don'ts" includes valuable tips like "ask for permission" from the people around you, and "don't be rude or creepy" while wearing your Google Glass. Valuable advice indeed.

Yahoo: The Startup Killer?

Many young, hungry entrepreneurs who find success with their projects dream of being acquired by a large, wealthy company. This dream usually includes scads of money for the creative team, scads of money for the startup itself – and a happy ending where their employees don't lose their jobs, and they can watch their 'baby' grow and prosper in its new home.

That's a pretty good dream. Unless you get acquired by Yahoo.

Yahoo seems to want to appear young and fresh by snapping up hip, new properties – according to ReadWrite.com, "In the first two months of 2014, Mayer's company acquired eight companies, including Aviate, an "intelligent homescreen" for your mobile device; Incredible Labs, the makers of the mobile assistant app Donna; Sparq, a mobile marketing firm; and Tomfoolery, an enterprise application studio."

By all outward appearances, an admirable goal for a company looking to grow and change. And all is well and good, until you realize that, “Under Mayer, 31 of 38 acquired startups have closed their services.”

Yahoo, it seems, is the startup killer.

And now – it's acquired – and killed – Vizify. According to ReadWrite, "..the company plans to sunset all its products. The startup is issuing complete refunds and providing a step-by-step process on its website to make the breakup easier." Lesson? Keep your eyes on Yahoo. Because if they come knocking, you’ll probably end up with a Faustian deal on your hands.

Bitcoin: What the Heck IS It?

Bitcoin has been in the news non stop lately. And it hasn't been good news. It seems you can't swing a cat these days without stumbling upon a story of computer hacker theft, or worse, when it comes to this particular 'cryptocurrency'. Just this week, Tokyo-based Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox's CEO Mark Karpeles filed for bankruptcy, saying "all of the bitcoin is gone."

But just what IS this seemingly "magical money"? How can it be legal? And why all the controversy surrounding it? The Consumerist has compiled a handy-dandy cheat sheet for you, and it answers most, if not all, of the questions surrounding this digital coin.

So, there you have it. Go hang out with your tech-loving friends this weekend with confidence! Don't forget to adjust your clocks, and have a safe and happy weekend.
