FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

By Phil Hollows

FeedBlitzFor today’s FeedBlitz:Rewind the Week, we’re going to do a little looking back, and a little looking forward.

This week saw the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web. According to one article (of many) “On March 12, 1989, computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee proposed a type of digital information sharing at CERN that would use "linked information," "nodes," and "hypermedia" to form a "web."”

And if you want a real giggle, have a look at the very first web site, from 1990 (and still live today).

Anyhow, let’s get started, and take a look at some of what’s been kicking around the World Wide Web this week, that you might have missed.

The First Cell Phone

Yes, there was another anniversary this week. Thirty years ago, someone actually paid a whopping $3,995 (more than $9,000 in 2014 dollars) to buy the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, the first handheld cellphone – er, car phone, if we’re being precise. As big as a lunchbox, this unwieldy brick would definitely kill your cool in a nightclub. But, as we’re wont to say, “Just look at us now!”

Colin Powell’s 60 Year Old Selfie

This gorgeous, black and white selfie shows us that, let’s face it, nothing’s *really* new, is it? Looking fly in front of his mirror, the former Secretary of State was a handsome 16 years old when he took this photograph, 60 years ago. Is that a Brownie he’s shooting? Maybe the best part of this image, the wonderful texture and richness of the image aside (no filters here, kids!), is that Powell shared this pic on Twitter, during Throwback Thursday. Awesome.

Nine Ways the Internet Will Change Your Life in 2025, for Better and Worse

While it was the World Wide Web’s 25th anniversary this week (not the Internet’s), and the two are quite different entities, in today’s vernacular they’ve become pretty much interchangeable. So, we give you a look forward, at the Internet 25 years from now. Inc.com reports on The Pew Research Center’s series of research projects to better understand the impact of the Web, and to try to predict and prepare for its future. And while “governments may lose control”, and “the Internet will become even more fragmented”, it’s not all bad news. “Wearable devices will transform health care delivery”, and “there will be added awareness of our world and our own behavior”. All in all, a very interesting article.

A Robot and a Ping Pong Champ Walk Into a Bar…

I mean, what more is there to say? Other than, man beats robot. Phew.

Have a nice weekend, everyone!
