Fortify Friday: The Latest Information on the I-40/440 Rebuild Project

Posted: 09 Jan 2015 06:27 AM PST

RALEIGH — If you drive through the Fortify I-40/440 Rebuild Project in southeast Raleigh, you will see ramped-up activity on the I-40 portion from the I-40/440 split to U.S. 1 in Cary. Barrier walls are now in place on I-40 between Gorman Street and U.S. 1 to protect crews working on the other side from traffic. That means, in some areas, motorists will drive through what those in the construction industry call "the cattle chute." They use this term to illustrate the narrowing of the roadway. With barrier walls on each side of the interstate, there is no access to the shoulders. The N.C. Department of Transportation reminds drivers traveling through this portion of the work zone to go the speed limit and avoid distractions to ensure safety. On the I-440 portion of the project, I-440 West from the I-40/440 split to U.S. 264 is expected open to three lanes in the coming weeks, depending on the weather. I-440 East is scheduled to open to three lanes shortly after that. Starting Monday, Jan. 12, Triangle Transit will kick off new express bus routes to help ease traffic on the Fortify project. The new routes include:  Cary to Downtown Raleigh (Route 300X) Weekday express service every 30 minutes between the Cary Train Station and downtown Raleigh from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. to 7 p.m.    South Cary to Raleigh (CTX) Weekday express service every 30 minutes between the Park-and-Ride lot at Wellington Park Shopping Center in South Cary, NC State University and downtown Raleigh from 6:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.   Fuquay-Varina to Raleigh (FRX) Weekday express service every 30 minutes between two Park-and-Ride lots in the Town of Fuquay-Varina and downtown Raleigh. The Park-and-Ride lots are located at South Park and the Food Lion off of Hilltop Needmore Road. Service will run from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.   Clayton to Raleigh (CLX) Weekday express service every 30 minutes from 6:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. between the Park-and-Ride lot at the Dollar Tree in Clayton off of Town Centre Boulevard and the Park-and-Ride lot at the White Oak Shopping Center and downtown Raleigh.
