SHELBY —  A N.C. Department of Transportation employee was honored today for his quick-thinking, life-saving actions during a medical emergency. Richard Dean Griffin, a Madison County Bridge Department employee, received NCDOT's Extra Mile Award at the N.C. State Board of Transportation meeting in Raleigh. The award is given to employees who go above and beyond their daily responsibilities. "Dean's action and skill certainly helped prevent a potential tragedy," said NCDOT Sec. On Nov. 1, Griffin was plowing snow along U.S. 25/70 near Marshall. After clearing the highway, he moved on to Stackhouse Road, a secondary road along his route. While on Stackhouse Road, Griffin was flagged down by an employee of a local power company, bringing his attention to another employee who was dangling from a power pole nearby and suffering from electrical burns. The power company workers couldn't access radio or cell service to call for help. Griffin used his radio to contact another state employee, who then called 911. While waiting for paramedics to arrive, Griffin and the power company employee helped to bring down the injured worker. Griffin wrapped a rope around the base of the power pole to use as an anchor while the injured worker was safely lowered to the ground. Griffin stayed with both men until additional help could arrive. The injured employee was taken to a burn center in Winston-Salem, where he was treated and later released. Griffin was nominated for the Extra Mile Award by Jay Swain, division engineer for NCDOT's Division 13."I feel Dean's swift action and safety knowledge are responsible for the positive outcome of this situation," Swain said. "He is a true example of what it means to go above and beyond the call of duty."***NCDOT***

NCDOT Workers’ Honored with The Extra Mile Award

Posted: 08 Jan 2015 02:42 AM PST

Raleigh – An NCDOT Davie County work crew that was credited with preventing what could have been a tragic accident last month received the department's Extra Mile Award. The honor recognizes NCDOT employees who go beyond their normal duties in service to the state of North Carolina. They received the award from Secretary Tony Tata Thursday at the monthly NCDOT Board of Transportation meeting in Raleigh. Tata said, "These gentlemen helped prevent possible tragedy when they stopped a wrong way driver traveling on I-40 in Davie County".  He thanked them for their "quick response and willingness to put themselves in danger." On the morning of December 4, shortly before noon, Davie County Fire Marshall Jerry K. Myers was traveling north on U.S. 601 when he saw a vehicle turn onto the exit ramp of Interstate 40 East. The driver proceeded the wrong way down the exit ramp, and started traveling west in the eastbound lane. In an attempt to stop the vehicle, Myers got on I-40 West, went to the next exit, and then drove east in the eastbound lane. By the time he got back to the exit ramp, several workers with the N.C. Department of transportation who had been working on the side of the interstate had managed to stop the vehicle and warn oncoming traffic of the hazard ahead. "If the workers that day had not taken the actions they had putting themselves in danger," said Fire Marshall Myers, "there is no doubt the outcome would have certainly turned into a tragic event." "On the way to overtake the vehicle I passed two tractor trailers and due to their speed at the time and the topography of the land they most surely would not have seen the o day prevented a tragic event from unfolding in our county that unfortunately we have seen on more than one occasion. Their selfless action no doubt saved the lives of not only the person in the passenger car but an unknown scenario of what could have been a major incident." Myers sent a letter of recommendation to the workers who were involved: Transportation Supervisor David Plagemann, and Transportation Workers Jerry Lee Burcham, Daniel Devoid, Cory Robertson, Andy Reavis and Elmer Hendren. NCDOT Division 9 engineer Pat Ivey nominated the crew for The Extra Mile Award ***NCDOT***
