| This Week at NCDOT – April 10, 2015 Posted: 10 Apr 2015 07:52 AM PDT RALEIGH — The following are highlights from the past week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. NCDOT Awards 2015 Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grants Walkers and cyclists are one step closer to seeing improvements in 10 North Carolina Communities thanks to assistance from NCDOT's Bicycle and Pedestrian Division. Now in its twelfth year, the NCDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Grant Program helps cities and towns develop an overall plan for expanding and encouraging safe walking and cycling within their community. The municipalities selected this year include Canton, Fairmont, Franklin, Hendersonville, High Point, Lenoir, Newport, Rutherfordton, Wendell and Windsor. To date, approximately $4.3 million dollars has been invested in 164 communities across North Carolina through this program. Transportation Secretary Tony Tata Participates in Tour Highlighting Importance of Federal Transportation Funding Secretary Tony Tata joined a group of nine federal and state transportation leaders from around the country this week on a tour highlighting the need for federal transportation funding reform. Tata was one of only five state Transportation Secretaries invited by Pennsylvania Congressman Bill Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, to visit projects in his state. The tour focused on the critical role the federal government plays in strengthening the nation's transportation network and the importance of identifying federal funding sources that offer long-term stability. NCDMV to Offer ID Cards, Driver License Renewals and Duplicates at the North Carolina Azalea Festival The NCDMV Mobile Unit will be at the Azalea Festival in Wilmington this weekend. The mobile unit will be available both days of the festival from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. offering state maps, driver handbooks and brochures to visitors. On Saturday, festival goers will be able to renew their driver license, as long as no written or road test is required. Duplicate driver licenses and ID cards for children and adults can also be ordered at the mobile unit on Saturday. This is all part of continued efforts to enhance the DMV customer experience. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month Taking your attention and eyes off the road for even a few seconds can have deadly consequences. That includes using a cell phone while driving. According to a study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, sending or receiving a text takes a driver's eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds - the equivalent of driving the length of an entire football field blind at 55 miles per hour. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is leading the way with the national texting enforcement campaign, U Drive. U Text. U Pay. In 2013 there were more than 4,000 distracted driving crashes in North Carolina, and 18 of those were fatalities. Nationally, more than 3,000 people were killed and more than 420,000 were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. It is illegal in North Carolina to text and drive. Remember: "If you are texting, you aren't driving" Onslow Maintenance Has No Accidents and Injuries in 2014 The NCDOT Onslow County Maintenance Yard was recognized recently for having gone an entire year without any accidents or injuries. "I have nothing but admiration for our field forces, who day in and day out serve the people of North Carolina, most of the time in ever increasing traffic; removing snow and ice, repairing potholes, fixing shoulder drop offs and any other maintenance related activities needed in a dangerous environment," said Division Three Maintenance Engineer David Thomas, who oversees maintenance operations for the six-county division that includes Onslow County. "For Onslow County to go the entire year, accident and injury free, speaks volumes of this unit, not only for their delivery of services to the public, but also their commitment to the state and each other for doing it in a safe manner. It is one thing to talk the talk, but Onslow County Maintenance walked the walk in 2014!" Thomas added. Maintenance crews were presented with two signs to commemorate the achievement.
