This Week at NCDOT – April 17, 2015

RALEIGH — The following are highlights from the past week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. Several of the below stories are also featured in our weekly newscast, NCDOT Now, which can be viewed by clicking here. Tractor Safety Billboard CampaignAs tractors and other pieces of farming equipment use roads this season, NCDOT has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau, as well as the N.C. State Highway Patrol to remind drivers to be safe and share the road. Many of the roads we drive on today began as routes farmers used to get their crops and livestock to and from market. Farmers still travel on our state's highways when planting and harvesting crops.  Drivers across the state will soon notice billboards popping up on highways, reminding them to keep an eye out for slow moving farm equipment, and not pass farm equipment unless you are in a passing zone and it is safe to make the pass.  Pavement PreservationNCDOT is beginning its pavement preservation work for the year. Pavement preservation is necessary for our state's roads and includes projects such as crack sealing and asphalt resurfacing. Just like changing the oil in your car to prevent engine damage, it is important to make improvements to good roads regularly to prevent the need for major road repairs later.  Each of NCDOT's highway divisions has prioritized the roads it will resurface or seal during the year.  U.S. 321 UpdateDrivers in the mountains will notice a quieter spring as crews wrap up blasting on the U.S. 321 widening project in Blowing Rock. Any remaining blasts needed on the project are expected to be small and should not require any road closures on U.S. 321.   The project is designed to improve safety along U.S. 321 by adding turn lanes, as well as additional travel lanes. Crews are also straightening curves along the mountain road. Cyclists and pedestrians will notice improvements too. New sidewalks will make it easier and safer to walk and bike to shops and restaurants in downtown Blowing Rock. You can find regular project updates on Twitter using #US321. Work is expected to be complete in 2016. NCDOT's Spring Litter Sweep Starts April 18From April 18 until May 2, volunteers will put on orange safety vests and begin filling up garbage bags with roadside litter as part of NCDOT's annual Spring Litter Sweep. Reaching from Murphy to Manteo, NCDOT is anticipating tens of thousands of volunteers to take part in this year's sweep. NCDOT encourages all North Carolinians to get involved and help clean up litter along their local roadsides.  Orange bags, gloves and safety vests will be provided through the local NCDOT maintenance office in each county. Volunteers are asked to contact their county NCDOT maintenance office in advance to obtain supplies. Governor McCrory Unveils Historic Connect NC Bond ProposalsGovernor Pat McCrory unveiled the Connect NC bond proposals that will connect North Carolina cities and towns by building roads, upgrading technology and constructing education facilities.    Under legislation that was filed at the General Assembly Thursday, two bond proposals of approximately $1.5 billion each - one for roads, the other for infrastructure - would go before the voters for approval either in October or November. The proposed transportation bond would distribute funding according to NCDOT's Strategic Mobility Formula to pay for 27 permit-ready highway projects throughout North Carolina that have completed environmental documents. In addition, the bond would fund the paving of 176 unpaved secondary roads totaling 113 miles.
