Governor McCrory Signs Bill that Will Lower Electric Rates in Eastern North Carolina

Raleigh, N.C. - Governor Pat McCrory signed legislation today that is expected to lower electric rates for consumers in eastern North Carolina and help attract new jobs to the region. The governor signed the legislation (SB 305) at the Wilson Operations Center. 

 

The new law will allow Duke Energy Progress to purchase generation assets from the 32 cities and towns that make up the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency (NCEMPA). The $1.2 billion purchase will significantly lower the agency's debt load from $1.9 billion to approximately $480 million.

Governor and First Lady Illuminate Mansion, Western Residence for World Autism Awareness Day

NCDOT Announces Annual Wildflower Award Winners

RALEIGH- The gorgeous scenic wildflower beds lining North Carolina's highways took center stage yesterday at the Wildflower Awards Banquet ceremony in Raleigh as NCDOT celebrated 30 years of beautifying North Carolina's roadsides.  The annual awards, sponsored by The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., recognize the efforts of NCDOT staff who carry out North Carolina's wildflower program and enhance the overall appearance and environmental quality of the state's highways. Awards are given to the best-looking flower beds in each region of the state, as well as the best overall highway division wildflower program.  State Roadside Environmental Unit Engineer, Don G. Lee recognized The Garden Club of North Carolina for their many years of support. The Garden Club President, Roadside Development Committee Chair and award judges were in attendance.  Transportation Secretary Tata gave remarks thanking staff and emphasizing the importance of the Wildflower Program. He also announced the launch of the NCDOT Roadside Environmental Unit's initiative to create pollinator habitats in conjunction with the Wildflower Program.  N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler also gave remarks emphasizing the importance of the work that NCDOT staff is doing to help pollinators and assist in preserving the agricultural industry in North Carolina.   In 1985, First Lady Dottie Martin approached NCDOT about initiating a program to beautify the highways of North Carolina. This set the stage for the establishment of the Wildflower Program. Today, the program has more than 1,500 acres of flower beds across the state. The program is primarily funded through the sale of personalized license plates. View a photo gallery of the award-winning flower beds.  The Wildflower Awards were given for beds that bloomed in 2014. The winners are:Best Overall Division Wildflower Program: 1. First Place – Division 5,        which includes Durham, Franklin, Granville, Person, Vance, Wake and Warren counties;2.    Second Place – Division 2,        which includes Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Pamlico and Pitt counties.  William D. Johnson Daylily Award:1. First Place – Division 13 – I-240 at mile marker 4.5 in Buncombe County; 2. Second Place – Division 11 – U.S. 221 in Ashe County. Best Regional Wildflower Planting, Eastern Region:1. First Place – Division 3 – I-40 Exit 341 in Sampson County; 2. Second Place – Division 4 – I-795 at mile marker 13.5 in Wilson County. Best Regional Wildflower Planting, Central Region: 1. First Place – Division 8 – U.S. 220 at Candor in Montgomery County; 2. Second Place – Division 10 – I-485 at I-85 Exit 10 in Mecklenburg County.  Best Regional Wildflower Planting, Western Region: 1. First Place – Division 14 – I-40 at mile marker 34 in Haywood County; 2. Second Place – Division 12 – U.S. 321 at High Shoals Road in Lincoln County.
