Looking at retinal cells may provide new approach to assessing anesthetic neurotoxicity in children

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:25 PM PDT

Could looking at the eyes provide a new way of studying how anesthesia affects the developing brain? The retinas of immature mice exposed to one widely used general anesthetic show evidence of "programmed cell death," or apoptosis, reports a study.

Discovery opens door to new strategy for cancer immunotherapy

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:23 PM PDT

Scientists raise the prospect of cancer therapy that works by converting a tumor's best friends in the immune system into its gravest enemies. The team has uncovered a mechanism that allows key immune system cells to keep a steady rein on their more belligerent brother cells, thereby protecting normal, healthy tissue from assault. The discovery has powerful implications for cancer immunotherapy, researchers say.

Nanodiamonds might prevent tooth loss after root canals

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:23 PM PDT

Nanodiamonds may help patients that have had the dreaded root canal. Dental researchers have developed a nanodiamond-reinforced version of gutta percha, the compound that is used to fill void spaces in dental root canals to prevent infection that can lead to tooth loss. Tested in patient-extracted teeth, the nanodiamond-embedded polymer was substantially stronger than conventional gutta percha. In addition, the scientists tested gutta percha with nanodiamonds that had been loaded with antibiotics and found that the compound effectively prevented bacterial infection.

Researchers use neuroimaging to explore reading deficits after left stroke

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:22 PM PDT

Researchers correlated neuroimaging data with reading deficits in patients with subacute left hemispheric stroke. Findings add to knowledge of neural mechanisms of reading and may be useful in developing reading interventions that address specific neurological deficits.

Discovery about protein structure opens window on basic life process

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:22 PM PDT

Biochemists have announced a fundamental discovery about protein structure that sheds new light on how proteins fold, which is one of the most basic processes of life. It had not been thought that this type of characterization was possible.

Camels test positive for respiratory virus in Kenya

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:22 PM PDT

Nearly half of camels in parts of Kenya have been infected by the virus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, a new study shows, and experts have given calls now for further research into the role they might play in the transmission of this emerging disease to humans.

New research focused on cell signaling mechanism linked to obesity

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:22 PM PDT

A mechanism has been identified for blocking the signal by which the cellular sodium-potassium pump amplifies oxidants (reactive oxygen species). These oxidants lead to obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Cancer drug improved cognition, motor skills in small Parkinson's clinical trial

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:22 PM PDT

An FDA-approved drug for leukemia improved cognition, motor skills and non-motor function in patients with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia in a small phase I clinical trial, report researchers. In addition, the drug, nilotinib (Tasigna by Novartis), led to statistically significant and encouraging changes in toxic proteins linked to disease progression (biomarkers).

Study finds mechanisms of early insulin treatment for diabetes may produce better outcomes

Posted: 17 Oct 2015 12:22 PM PDT

A pilot study of 23 adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes found early insulin therapy to be as effective as 15 months of oral therapy and may improve the body's ability to produce insulin.
