Re: Why these letters?

There's something called the phonemic similarity effect, where
encoding similar sounding items in a rapid fashion, then recalling
them pretty quickly lowers accuracy. I don't know if anyone has
tested it on the n-back, but would guess you'd see it.

A related issue is whether it would diminish the benefits of n-back
training (if you're a believer :). The interference seems like it
might be useful.
