Sumatran tiger kills 5-year-old in western Indonesia

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 02:40 AM PST

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) -- A young girl was killed during the weekend when she was attacked by a Sumatran tiger while playing outside her house in western Indonesia, local media reported on Monday.

The tiger attack happened on Saturday morning when a 5-year-old girl was playing with her two elder siblings outside their house near Cirebon Baru village, which is located in Kepahiang regency in Southwest Sumatra. Their parents were not at home.

"The victim was playing with her two elder siblings outside their house when suddenly a tiger emerged from the wood and attacked her," said Southwest Sumatra Natural Resources Conservancy Agency (BKSDA) head Supartono, as quoted by the Jakarta Post.

Supartono said the siblings of the girl, who was identified as Fitria binti Judin, ran about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) to Cirebon Baru village to get help as they did not know where their parents were. When they later returned, Fitria was dead and was missing her left leg.

"She was already lifeless when found, while the tiger had retreated to the woods," Supartono said, according to the newspaper. "The residents immediately evacuated the victim and brought her to their village for burial."

The Jakarta Post said the plantation where the family lives may be located in a protected forest known as the Bukit Daun. It said officers will attempt to capture the tiger and take it to a conservation area if it is found the plantation is outside the protected area.

While tiger attacks on humans are rare, the number has been increasing due to forest destruction in the region. Environmentalists have expressed grave concern as Indonesia's tiger population in the Sumatran jungle has been reduced to only 400, Greenpeace reported in October.

Illegal logging and plantations have been signaled as the main problem facing the tigers. According to the government of Indonesia, each year approximately 1 million hectares (2.4 million acres) of forest is being cleared. The devastating rate is likely to soon drive the Sumatran tiger into extinction unless urgent action is taken.

As the natural habitat of the tigers is being destroyed, the animals are being forced out of their areas and are often seen in villages in search of food or shelter. This has increased tensions among tigers and locals.

Increasing population and the subsequent need for agricultural plantation such as rice paddies previously drove Indonesia's other two tiger sub-species into complete extinction. In the 1930s, the Bali tiger became extinct due to hunting and deforestation and in the 1970s the Javan tiger suffered the same fate, leaving the Sumatran tiger as the sole tiger sub-species in the country.

U.S. warns of terrorist attacks in Nigerian capital

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 02:13 AM PST

ABUJA (BNO NEWS) -- The U.S. government on Sunday warned that it has received information that the Boko Haram Islamist militant group is planning to attack several hotels in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.

An emergency message from the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria said potential targets may include the Nicon Luxury, the Sheraton Hotel and the Transcorp Hilton Hotel. It said the attacks may be carried out during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which ends on Wednesday.

"All U.S. Government personnel have been instructed to avoid these locations, and previously scheduled events have been cancelled," the emergency message said. "American citizens should expect additional police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks in Abuja for the foreseeable future."

The U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria urged U.S. citizens in Abuja to exercise additional caution and maintain a high state of vigilance and personal awareness, particularly in and around Abuja near Nigerian government facilities, diplomatic missions, large gathering places, hotels, markets and malls, and places of worship.

The warning comes just days after the Boko Haram, which is also known as the Nigerian Taliban, carried out a three-hour bombing and shooting rampage in the city of Damaturu in Yobe state. The attacks left at least 82 people killed and more than 100 others injured.

The Boko Haram group has been blamed by Nigerian officials for most of the region's terrorist attacks and seeks the imposition of an extremist stance of the Shariah law, which is a Muslim code of conduct. The group's name, 'Boko Haram' in the local language of Hausa, roughly translates as 'Western religion is sacrilegious' or 'non-Islamic religion is a sin.'

Protesters Ring the White House Opposing Pipeline Plans

Posted: 06 Nov 2011 05:54 PM PST

Protesters say they have formed a human chain around the White House to oppose plans for an oil pipeline they say would be bad for the environment.

Thousands of protesters gathered Sunday afternoon and linked hands in a big circle around the presidential residence and buildings on either side of it.  They called on President Barack Obama, who was away from the White House at the time, to scrap plans for the pipeline which would carry oil from tar sands in Canada to oil fields in Texas.

The State Department is currently reviewing the pipeline proposal, but Mr. Obama has indicated he will make the final decision.

White House spokesman Clark Stevens said Sunday the president recognizes there are "a number of critical issues" to consider, including climate change, public health and natural resources. But he said the State Department would also consider U.S. energy security and economic issues.

A spokesman for the company behind the pipeline, TransCanada, argued the project would create thousands of jobs and reduce U.S. reliance on overseas oil.

Report: Justin Bieber to take DNA test to end baby rumors

Posted: 06 Nov 2011 03:38 PM PST

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- Teenage pop star Justin Bieber has agreed to take a DNA test to prove he is not the father of a California woman's baby, TMZ.com reported on Sunday. His lawyer then plans to sue her.

The 20-year-old woman, Mariah Yeater, made headlines earlier this week when she filed a complaint in a Los Angeles court in which she alleges that 17-year-old Bieber is the father of her 3-month-old baby boy. Bieber himself and his representatives strongly denied the claims.

But to end the rumors, Bieber has agreed to take a DNA test later this month which will confirm whether or not he is the father of Yeater's child, TMZ.com reported. When the test shows Bieber is not the father, his lawyer plans to sue the woman.

"We're told Justin and his team are so serious they directed [Bieber's lawyer Howard] Weitzman to find a lab to do the test and Weitzman has already selected one," TMZ.com reported, adding that Yeater's lawyers 'appeared nervous' when they heard the news.

The gossip and entertainment news website also cited sources as saying that Bieber and his team think it is important to file a lawsuit against Yeater to show there are consequences when someone trumps up 'phony, hurtful allegations' against a celebrity.

The court documents which were filed against Bieber this week revealed that Yeater is demanding he take paternity tests to confirm his alleged involvement and asks for him to provide "adequate support for my baby."

Yeater claims to have had a sexual encounter with Bieber after his October 25, 2010 concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Yeater was 19 at the time while Bieber was 16, which means it would have been illegal for her to have sex with Bieber under state law.

"After waiting for a short period of time with several young women, Justin Bieber appeared and engaged me in conversation," Yeater stated in the lawsuit. "Immediately, it was obvious that we were mutually attracted to one another, and we began to kiss. Shortly thereafter, Justin Bieber suggested that I go with him to a private place where we could be alone."

The lawsuit continues, adding that after walking to a private area, Bieber told her he wanted to "make love" to her and that it would be his "first time." Yeater continues by stating that they went into a bathroom to be alone where Bieber's personality "changed drastically" as he allegedly began touching her and repeatedly said he wanted to "f--k the sh-t out of me."

"At the time I asked him to put a condom [on] for protection," she states, "but he insisted that he did not want to." Yeater said Bieber stripped her naked and then had sex with her, detailing that she was on top of a shelf and that the sex was "brief, lasting approximately 30 seconds."

Bieber's representatives immediately denied the allegations. "It is sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims. We will vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to defend and protect Justin against these allegations."

On Friday morning, Bieber himself first reacted Yeater's claims. "I'd just like to say that basically none of those allegations are true, and I know that I'm going to be a target but I'm never going to be a victim, you know," he told NBC's TODAY show.

He added: "I just think it's crazy because every night after the show, I've gone right from the stage right to my car so, it's crazy that some people would make up such false allegations but, to set the record straight, none of it is true."

When asked if Bieber ever met Yeater, he said: "[I] never met the woman."

Spanish soldier shot dead in western Afghanistan

Posted: 06 Nov 2011 02:39 PM PST

KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- A Spanish soldier died in the western region of Afghanistan on Sunday after he was shot by a sniper, the Spanish government confirmed.

The attack happened southeast of Ludina in Badghis province, according to Spain's Ministry of Defense. It said a number of Spanish troops, who are training Afghan army personnel, were accompanying an Afghan patrol when a sniper opened fire at them.

The victim was identified as 35-year-old Staff Sergeant Joaquin Moya Espejo who received a gunshot to his chest, critically injuring him despite the personal armor he was wearing. He was airlifted to a military hospital at Forward Operating Base Todd but went into cardiac arrest during the flight.

Spain's Ministry of Defense said Espejo, who is from the city of Cordova in southern Spain, was the father of a child. "His family has been informed of his death," the Ministry said in a statement.

Upon receiving the news, Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacon canceled his scheduled trip to the island of El Hierro and said he would personally travel to Afghanistan to receive more information about the incident. Chief of Defense Staff José Julio Rodríguez Fernández will accompany him.

Coalition casualties in Afghanistan have been rising sharply in recent years with a total coalition death toll of 709 in 2010, making it the deadliest year for international troops since the war began in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

There are currently more than 130,000 NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops in Afghanistan, including more than 1,500 Spanish soldiers.

So far this year, at least 514 coalition service members have been killed in Afghanistan. Most troops are American and are killed in the country's south, which is plagued by IED attacks on troops and civilians. The deadliest incident happened in August when a U.S. helicopter crashed in eastern Afghanistan, killing 30 U.S. troops, seven Afghan soldiers and an Afghan interpreter.
