Blast at steel plant in northeastern China kills 13, injures 17

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 02:23 AM PST

SHENYANG, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- Thirteen workers were killed on late Monday evening when a mold exploded at a steel plant in northeastern China, state-run media reported on Tuesday. More than a dozen others were injured.

The explosion took place at around 11:30 p.m. local time on Monday at a steel-casting workshop in Anshan, the third largest prefecture level city in Liaoning province. The plant is owned by Angang Heavy Machinery Co. Ltd., one of China's largest machine manufacturers.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said the blast happened when a mold, about 10 meters (32 feet) in diameter, exploded. The explosion caused sand and concrete inside of the mold to burst out, killing more than a dozen workers who were about to finish the casting of a ring-shaped piece of steel.

Xinhua, quoting a statement from the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China, reported that thirteen workers were killed in the blast. Seventeen others were injured and were receiving treatment at area hospitals, it said. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The rapid economic growth in China, in combination with poor safety measures, frequently result in deadly industrial accidents. In early January, six people were killed and two others were injured when a blast ripped through a geothermal plant in northern China.

Nigeria: 30 killed in market attack in Borno State

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 01:59 AM PST

MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 30 people were killed on Monday afternoon when suspected militants attacked a local fish market in northeastern Nigeria, local media reported on Tuesday.

Suspected members of the Boko Haram militant group stormed the Baga market in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, at around 1:30 p.m. local time on Monday and opened fire before detonating explosives at market stalls. The exact death toll remained unclear on Tuesday.

Joint Military Task Force (JTF) spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Mohammed told The Moment news portal that security forces responded to the scene and killed eight members of the sect who were attacking the market. Security forces also found three bombs and carried out controlled explosions.

Witnesses said the Boko Haram stormed the market as they shouted that market traders had betraded the group and helped the JTF, which resulted in the arrest of several of its members. The militants then opened fire indiscriminately and detonated at least eight explosive devices.

Some Nigerian media reports said at least 30 people were killed, including a number of women and children. A nurse at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital said at least 20 bodies were brought to the facility, and several others may have been brought to other locations.

The Boko Haram group has been blamed for most of the region's terrorist attacks and seeks the imposition of an extremist stance of the Shariah law, which is a Muslim code of conduct. The group's name, in the local language of Hausa, roughly translates as 'Western religion is sacrilegious' or 'non-Islamic religion is a sin.'

UNESCO calls for probe into murder of Brazilian journalists

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 01:46 AM PST

BRASILIA, BRAZIL (BNO NEWS) -- Officials at the United Nations (UN) on Monday condemned the murders of two journalists in Brazil earlier this month and have called for a thorough investigation to find those responsible.

Earlier this month, on February 12, Paulo Roberto Cardoso Rodrigues was shot and killed by two unidentified men on a motorcycle while he was driving home in Ponta Porá, which is near the border with Paraguay. Cardoso served as the editor of Jornal Da Praça, a daily newspaper, and the website Mercosul News.

Just four days earlier, on February 8, journalist Mario Randolfo Marques Lopes was abducted and shot dead along with his girlfriend in Barra do Piraí in the state of Rio de Janeiro. He was the editor-in-chief of the Vassouras na Net website.

Irina Bokova, Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), issued a statement in which she deplored the murders of the two journalists and called for a thorough investigation into the killings.

"These killings are an intolerable attack on the profession of journalism and on an individual's basic human right to free speech," Bokova said, adding that thorough investigations of the deaths are needed "to enable journalists to continue reporting without having to fear for their lives and for the safety of their relatives."

At least eleven journalists or media professionals have been killed in Brazil since 2002, and a UNESCO-backed research project is currently examining the issues facing community media operating in violent or difficult areas in Rio de Janeiro.

The following information provided by Gaston College:

All of us like to look our best and we often need help with our hair, nails, and skin. Cosmetologists are who we go to for beauty maintenance or for a fresh look. Gaston College has offered a cosmetology program for several years at an off-campus site in Lincolnton.

In January, the program moved to a modern simulated salon in the lower level of the Cochrane Building on our Lincoln Campus. The expanded space enables us to serve more students and to offer services to the community. We are excited about the program and the opportunities the new space provides.

Instructor demonstrates trimming techniques to beginning cosmetology students

Cosmetology is a diploma program that can be completed in four semesters for full time day students and eight semesters for part time evening students. Cosmetology is also offered as a Career and College Promise course for junior and senior high school students who attend Lincoln County Schools.  Upon completion of the program, graduates are qualified to sit for the NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts licensure exam.

A vital and necessary portion of the training of our Cosmetology students is their live salon clinical services.  The licensing board requires Cosmetology students to perform a specific number of haircuts, manicures, pedicures, facials, hair color services, and various chemical perms as a requirement to graduate and sit for the licensing exam.  Our new state of the art facility allows our advanced students to perform these practices in a simulated salon with professional equipment, tools, and hair and skin products while being supervised by licensed instructors.  We offer these services Tuesday-Saturday beginning at 9am and ending at 2pm.

The new Lincoln cosmetology facility also provides training in facial services

Careers for licensees include hairstylist, nail technicians, skin care specialist, and make-up artist. These careers are service oriented in professional salons.  However, they are also qualified to work in dermatologist offices, high end spa facilities, the movie and film industry, sales representatives as marketing specialist of professional beauty product lines, and platform artists for professional trade shows.

We register new students every fall and spring semester but accept applications for the program year round.

Anyone interested in finding out more information on classes offered or salon services can visit our webpage under the Gaston College Health Education Division.

Our salon clinic phone number for appointments is (704) 748-5252.

The accident happened at around 5:30 a.m. local time on Sunday when two trains carrying coal collided on a track in the Muara Enim Regency of South Sumatra province. One of the trains was carrying 44 coal carriages while the other was carrying 16 coal carriages.

Two other crew members were injured in the accident, Antara reported. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Company officials were still working to remove the ill-fated trains from the railways on Monday, causing the stoppage of coal supply to Java. "The rail traffic from Palembang to Lubuklinggau as well as to Tanjungkarang is not operating at the moment," a witness was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Post.
