Fargo Bank has chosen a few of our partnering agencies to assist them in the Wells Fargo Day of Caring set for June 2, 2012. The United Way of Lincoln County is thrilled to have been chosen as one of those agencies. We are looking for you to help in any way you can. Our project will be to help the United Way office become energy efficient. We want to be good stewards of the monies given to us and this is one way we can cut way down on expenditures.

As you know the United Way office is located in the Historical Building at 211 W. Water Street. We are in need of workers for this event. If you would like to volunteer or you have the capability to pass this information along I would greatly appreciate it.

This is the first year Lincoln County has been chosen to be a part of the Wells Fargo Day of Caring and it would be great to show some community support. We need plumbers, painters, window professionals, home efficiency experts, etc.;

If you would like more information please contact The United Way at your earliest convenience.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Office News Release

May 21, 2012

Lincolnton, NC – Lincoln County Sheriff's detectives are investigating two separate stabbing incidents that occurred on Saturday.

On Saturday night around 7:25 p.m. Baker District deputies responded to 4454 Hunter Rhyne Road in connection with a disturbance and stabbing incident.  Deputies arrived on the scene where they discovered the victim staggering down the road covered in blood.  Officers requested an emergency response from EMS and confronted a group of people including the suspect at a residence in the 4500 block of Hunter Rhyne Road.

Jefferson Shane Bryant, 44, of 4454 Hunter Rhyne Road was stabbed several times in the side and back.  He was airlifted to CMC-Main where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, Christopher Joseph Kapusta, 20, of 4454 Hunter Rhyne Road was charged with felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon inflicting Serious Injury.  He was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond.

Detective Matt Lykins said Bryant, who was described as the suspect's mother's boyfriend, and Kapusta got into an altercation at the residence and Kapusta pulled a knife on Bryant.  Kapusta then left the scene and went to a neighbor's residence.  A short time later, Bryant went to the neighbor's home to confront Kapusta again and that is when the stabbing occurred.

In a separate incident, three people were injured during an altercation at a large party on Haynes Road Saturday morning around 2:00 a.m.  Baker District deputies responded to the residence after several people who were injured in the fight were taken to CMC-Lincoln.  One person, Darry Trevelle Scott, 21, of Highland Drive had been stabbed and taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.  He was treated then airlifted to CMC-Main.

The other injuries involved someone hit in the head with a bottle and another person punched in the nose.  Investigation into the incident is continuing.  Detectives say a number of people at the party were underage and drinking alcohol.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office at 704-732-9050.

Lincolnton Downtown Cruise-in sees record turnout

Sunny skies and mid 80 degree temperatures created the perfect setup for the spring Lincolnton Downtown Cruise-in on May 20. More than 300 classic rides from 1974 older were on display for the occasion, which saw a record turnout for spectators and entries.

Jerry Fletcher, one of the event's organizers, said he was very pleased with this year's participation.

"We had cars lined all the way down to Fifth-Third Bank," he said. "The weather was perfect and everyone had a great time."

Fletcher sees a common tread among many of the event-goers.

Muscle cars raise their hoods.

"About 80% of the spectators or car owners were cruisers back in the day," he said. "In the 1970s, you could find 500 cars cruising from Hardees to the Court Square in Lincolnton every weekend."

Cruising is no longer allowed in Main Street in Lincolnton, which makes this semi-annual event even more exciting.

"It brings back a lot of good memories," said Robert Walters of Lincolnton. "We used to cruise up and down through here on Main Street. Now it is nice to check out the cars and swap stories."

Walters, who showcased his '65 Chevy Nova, recalled one story in particular.

"I had just bought and restored a Nova and had it on display during a previous cruise-in when a young boy saw the car and started asking questions about it. Come to find out, the Nova was owned by the boy's father a long time ago when he lived in Crouse."

But there is more to the Lincolnton Downtown Cruise-in than just sharing stories and burning rubber; proceeds from the event normally go toward a non-profit organization or a church. But this year, the money raised will benefit Eric Crump a long-time cruiser from Lincolnton who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Stan Goodson and Ronnie Proctor spearheaded a silent auction, 50/50 pot and donations, which totaled up to around $1,450 for the fundraiser.

The event has seen a lot of change over the years since it was first started in the mid-90s by Mike Filman along with the VFW and Moose Lodge.

"The first couple of years, it was just a fall cruise-in, but now we do two a year cause of the demand," said Fletcher. "I think the next one (in the fall) will be even bigger!"
