LinkedIn Updates Mobile App, Experiments With Ads

LinkedIn has updated its mobile app for the first time since 2011 and will run a small test of "sponsored content" i.e. ads in the stream. The test comes after LinkedIn announced a similar test of sponsored content in its iPad app in January. This would be the first time a LinkedIn phone app would sport the ads. Like other recent app updates, the update for iOS and Android has a heavy emphasis on photos.

Twitter Launches Keyword Targeting for Ads

Twitter on Wednesday introduced keyword targeting for advertising, meaning that you may see Promoted Tweets based on stuff you have tweeted about. In a blog post, Nipoon Malhotra, product manager for revenue at Twitter, gave the following example of how the program will work: Let’s say a user tweets about enjoying the latest album from their favorite band, and it so happens that band is due to play a concert at a local venue.

'The Guardian': We're Not Planning on a Paywall

Newspapers worldwide are putting up metered paywalls at a record pace in an effort to convert their large, free-reading online audiences into paid subscribers. In the UK, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Sun, among others, have all implemented (or announced plans to implement) paywalls — but The Guardian, which reported a pre-tax loss of £75.6m in 2011, has no plans to join them.

Ev Williams' Medium Buys Journalism Startup Matter

Medium, the publishing platform launched by Twitter's co-founder Ev Williams, has acquired a long-form journalism startup called Matter for an undisclosed sum, the two companies announced Wednesday. Matter raised more than $140,000 from a Kickstarter campaign in early 2012 — nearly three times its original goal — to produce in-depth science and technology stories, and published its first piece in November.

Foxconn Will Now Pay Microsoft for Every Android Device It Makes

Microsoft and Foxconn, the world's largest manufacturer of consumer electronics, just made a deal that will give Microsoft a cut of every Android device Foxconn makes. The terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Microsoft did say it would be getting royalties from Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn, under the agreement.
