Today, most online display ads are sold by the number of impressions or by click-throughs, metrics that favor sites that generate lots of pageviews, perhaps through short articles, sensationalized headlines or slideshows. What those metrics don't favor is long or engaging journalism — that is, truly interesting content that people spend a lot of time with.

Google Claims 900 Million Android Activations

Google opened its I/O keynote on Wednesday by quoting a jaw-dropping stat: 900 million Android activations. The figure comes after Google had claimed 400 million activations at last year's show. The OS was introduced four and a half years ago. As of July 2012, Android's chief rival, iOS, had 410 million activations. "People are adopting these devices at an amazing pace," Google SVP of Chrome and Android Sundar Pichai said.

New Yorker Launches 'Strongbox' for Anonymous Transmission of Files

The New Yorker on Wednesday launched "Strongbox," an online system for sources to send files and messages to the magazine's journalists with "a reasonable amount of anonymity," as Senior Editor Amy Davidson put it. A source can use Strongbox to send information anonymously in the following way: First, they access the Tor network, which anonymizes users via a series of relays encrypting traffic at each step.

PayPal to Offer Free Payment Processing for 'Qualifying' Merchants

In a bid to one-up Square, PayPal is offering free payment processing through the rest of the year for some U.S. businesses that use its PayPal Here mobile payment system. Starting next month, PayPal will offer free credit, debit card and check processing to "qualifying" merchants. The company's announcement didn't outline how such businesses can qualify for the program.
