LINCOLNTON-The Lincoln County YMCA has nearly completed the Camp Creekside Outdoor Recreational Center which includes a splash pad, beach volleyball court, two soccer fields, and a tent area for picnics.

But one of the more utilized additions is the outdoor chapel which was recently dedicated in honor of the late James Miller Moore, Jr., or more commonly known around Lincoln County as "Bo", who passed away Feb. 7, 2011.

Moore was very active in the community while playing important roles in the completions of the Lincoln County portions of highways 321 and 16, Denver Days, the first Denver Christmas Tree and East Lincoln Christmas Parade.

Moore was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Lincolnton where he was president of the Men of the Church Contributions. He also served on many boards and committees such as Board of Directors of the United Way, numerous boards for the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, VIP Business Committee of the Lincoln County Board of Education, Board of Directors of the Lincoln Medical Center Foundations, and chaired the Contributions Drive for the Boy Scouts just to name a few.

Many festivals were on hand during the dedication on June 2. Linda Harrill Rudisill led in prayer, close friend Hunter Boyd recalled the highlights of Moore's life, camp councilors lead in several camp rally songs, Cain Leonard's trumpet ensemble delivered a performance of Amazing Grace, and a plaque was dedicated in honor of Moore which reads "Psalm 118:24-This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

A ribbon cutting was held on June 2.

The chapel will now be used daily for devotions by campers. In the future, the chapel will host YMCA Bible studies, community events, and church and youth group meetings.

Friends and family members of Bo believe he would be honored by naming the outdoor chapel after him as he shared many of the same values and focus as the Y: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

"Bo knew a healthy mind and a healthy body went hand in hand," said Bo's sister, Kathryn Bumgardner. "Physical fitness was part of his routine. He enjoyed working out at the gym and encouraged others to do so too. Everyone wore flip-flops to the gym one day in memory of Bo because he always wore flip-flops."

A plaque is mounted on the side of a rock to honor Bo.

The setting for the outdoor chapel is equally as fitting for Moore as it is nestled in the woods across from the YMCA accessible only by a walking path.

"Bo would have wanted to help have a place for the children to play," said Paula Turner, a friend of Moore. "Bo loved nature and outdoors. You can definitely feel the present of the Holy Spirit here."

Campers pray at the outdoor chapel.

Camry the kitten hitched a ride under the hood of a Toyota Camry during the first week of June. The kitten mistakenly climbed into the engine in Chester S.C.  and was discovered in Charlotte N.C. when a co-worker contacted the owner of the car during  his break at work.

JD Adams of Lincolnton N.C. was quick to mount a rescue.  “The kitten wouldn’t  come out,” he said. “We had a tape measure and some PVC piping we used to push her so she would move around to where we could grab her.”

” Other than a little dust and dehydration she was pretty healthy,” remembered JD Adams. “I took her to Lincolnton Animal Hospital for a check up. She was given a shot and was little under weight. ”

Camry seems to like her new home with JD & Candice Adams. She plays with new friend Sophia, a Basset hound.
