Pepsi Launches Promo With Apple's Passbook
8:59:34 AMTodd Wasserman

Pepsi is offering a deal via Apple's Passbook digital wallet for a free 20 oz. Pepsi Max. However, you have to download Consumr's app and be near one of the 450 Kum & Go stores in the U.S. to take part.

Those who can take part will be alerted when they're near one of the convenience stores. Kum & Go -- which is based mostly in the Midwest -- is supporting the effort with in-store signage and point-of-sale materials

Apple introduced Passbook as part of iOS6 on Sept. 19 as a folder for boarding passes, tickets and coupons. Within days, retailers Target and Gap were offering Passbook deals. Since then, others like Starbucks, Discover and American Express have also joined the platform.

Consumr, a free app often described as a "Yelp for consumer good,"s lets consumers get product reviews by scanning a barcode.

Google's Vic Gundotra Was Asked Not to Tweet After 'Two Turkeys' Tweet
5:44:54 AMStan Schroeder

Google's Senior VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra was asked not to tweet again after he posted a tweet which critiqued Nokia's deal with Microsoft

Gundotra revealed this himself in a recent interview, which you can see in the video above (the interesting part is at 1:01:37). Responding to a question why he has stopped tweeting, Gundotra said "I made one tweet, and then I was asked not to tweet again (...) by my boss".

The offending tweet was posted right after the Nokia-Microsoft deal was publicized in February 2011. It said "Two turkeys do not make an Eagle," quite obviously referencing the Finnish mobile giant and Microsoft's Windows Phone platform which Nokia had embraced.

Telehealth Services Provide Remote Patients Link to Doctors
Thursday, December 06, 2012 10:21 PMKate Freeman

The device sitting on the center of your company's meeting room table connects you to your colleagues around the world. In fact, virtually every Fortune 100 company uses the video conferencing solution from Polycom, but implications for the video- and tele- conferencing device are more widespread than just corporate boardrooms.

Recently, 1,400 researchers stationed in the South Pole didn't have to wait-out the brutal six month winter to speak with a doctor. Those who needed the advice of a physician could do so on a "telemedicine" network operated by the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and powered by Polycom

Thursday, December 06, 2012 12:27 PMSeth Fiegerman

The long wait for a T-Mobile iPhone may finally be over

T-Mobile announced Thursday that it will start selling some Apple products in 2013, though the company did not specify whether it would be the iPhone or iPad.

"T-Mobile USA has entered into an agreement with Apple to bring products to market together in 2013," T-Mobile's parent company Deutsche Telekom revealed in a release for analysts.

In response to a request for comment, a T-Mobile rep would say only that "additional details will be made available at a later date."

11 Big Tech Trends You'll See in 2013
Thursday, December 06, 2012 11:29 AMLance Ulanoff

Writing prediction pieces is a funny thing because there is really no such thing as “next year.” Time is a continuum, and the calendar is a human construct designed to help us keep organized. Things that will happen “next year” are already happening now, we may simply not take note of them until the sun rises and sets dozens and dozens of times.

So as I look to 2013, I realize that much of which I expect to see in the coming 12-to-14 months has been quietly (or not so quietly) developing for months, even years. From my point of view, it’s unlikely 2013 will contain any revolutionary or ground-breaking advancements in technology, social media or even the nexus of the two. Believe me, I want breakthroughs. But in order for them to be such, they have to be things I’ve never seen before, which means I have little chance of predicting them. Let's be honest, I’m no Nostradamus.

December Saturday Evenings Are Most Popular Time to Lose Your Phone
Thursday, December 06, 2012 10:37 AMSamantha Murphy

Smartphones go missing at 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays in Decembers more than rest of the year, a new study suggests.

A survey conducted by data backup company Mozy among 3,500 UK adults revealed British consumers lose items the most during this time period due to the busy-ness of the holiday season -- a time when shopping for gifts and running to parties makes it harder to keep track of everything.

Although the study found items such as jewelry and keys also get lost during this time, smartphones are most likely to disappear in the holiday shuffle. Smartphones account for 35% of all items lost by men worldwide and 25% by women.
