Researchers Build a 3D-Printed Transform Robot
Thursday, December 06, 2012 10:38 PMLorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai

Japanese hobby researchers at Brave Robotics have developed a functioning, entirely 3D-printed robot inspired by Transformers

The remotely controlled bot can turn into a car and vice versa in just a few instants and has a slew of impressive features, including Wi-Fi camera, headlights and it can even shoot little darts. The "Transform robot" is the result of 10 years of work and several iterations. The robot went from a rudimentary pair of legs that barely moved to this impressive version, which looks like it could have been featured in a Transformers movie.

Spotify Wants to Make Music Discovery Truly Social
Thursday, December 06, 2012 5:03 PMChristina Warren

Spotify has plans to make music discovery more personalized and more social.

We've always classified discovery as Spotify's Achilles' heel. Because Spotify's catalogue is so large, finding new music or rediscovering old favorites is difficult

For a time, Spotify was happy to relegate discovery details to the service's desktop apps. And while Spotify will continue to leverage those apps in helping users find new music, discovery will now be an intrinsic part of the Spotify service on all platforms.

Mysterious Material Remembers Its Shape
Thursday, December 06, 2012 1:57 PMTechNewsDaily

A strange new substance acts like a liquid when exposed to air, but takes a solid shape when it's dunked in water.

The new stuff is a metamaterial, scientists' word for a lab-made material that has properties that are uncommon in nature. Even among metamaterials, however, it's unusual -- it's composed of man-made DNA, while most metamaterials are composed of nonbiological chemicals such as silicon or copper. Its creators are calling it a "meta-hydrogel."

In the future, metamaterials made of biological stuff could go into soft, flexible circuits, according to a statement from Cornell University, where the meta-hydrogel was made. Because they have pores in which drug molecules could fit, meta-hydrogels could help release medicines slowly inside the body, the statement said

11 Big Tech Trends You'll See in 2013
Thursday, December 06, 2012 11:29 AMLance Ulanoff

Writing prediction pieces is a funny thing because there is really no such thing as “next year.” Time is a continuum, and the calendar is a human construct designed to help us keep organized. Things that will happen “next year” are already happening now, we may simply not take note of them until the sun rises and sets dozens and dozens of times.

So as I look to 2013, I realize that much of which I expect to see in the coming 12-to-14 months has been quietly (or not so quietly) developing for months, even years. From my point of view, it’s unlikely 2013 will contain any revolutionary or ground-breaking advancements in technology, social media or even the nexus of the two. Believe me, I want breakthroughs. But in order for them to be such, they have to be things I’ve never seen before, which means I have little chance of predicting them. Let's be honest, I’m no Nostradamus.

December Saturday Evenings Are Most Popular Time to Lose Your Phone
Thursday, December 06, 2012 10:37 AMSamantha Murphy

Smartphones go missing at 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays in Decembers more than rest of the year, a new study suggests.

A survey conducted by data backup company Mozy among 3,500 UK adults revealed British consumers lose items the most during this time period due to the busy-ness of the holiday season -- a time when shopping for gifts and running to parties makes it harder to keep track of everything.

Although the study found items such as jewelry and keys also get lost during this time, smartphones are most likely to disappear in the holiday shuffle. Smartphones account for 35% of all items lost by men worldwide and 25% by women.

3D Printer Transforms Moon Dirt Into Lunar Base
Thursday, December 06, 2012 10:26 AMSpace.com

For space scientists dreaming up a manned base on the moon, 3D printing with lunar dust looms as an attractive possibility. Such on-demand fabrication would allow astronauts to repair broken parts, manufacture spare ones and maybe even build structures, all out of the dirt scooped from under their boots.

In a new study involving artificial moon dust, engineers have shown that the technology is close to becoming reality.

With 10 pounds of simulated lunar dirt (or regolith) in hand, NASA officials approached researchers at Washington State University and challenged them to melt and resolidify the fake moon rock using 3D laser printing technology, which produces objects layer by layer based on a computer model.

Thursday, December 06, 2012 9:14 AMEmily Price

Popular iOS mobile photo editing app Snapseed has finally made its way to Android.
