How Small Businesses Can Take Advantage of Facebook's Graph Search
Thursday, April 04, 2013 7:29 PMTodd Wasserman
If you missed the search revolution the first time around, you may have a second chance with Facebook Graph Search. Emphasis on "may." The tool, which Facebook rolled out in January, is still so new that company execs tend to reflexively answer queries about it by saying, "It's too soon to tell." That's true, though. At this point, the vast majority of Facebook users don't have Graph Search.

Courtney Love Drops the F-Bomb in Ad for E-Cigarettes
Thursday, April 04, 2013 2:34 PMTodd Wasserman
Courtney Love makes a characteristically profane appearance in this ad for NJOY e-cigarettes. The former Hole frontwoman is shown puffing away at some upper-class function. After someone rats her out, a haughty woman tells her, "You know, you can't smoke in here," to which Love replies, "Relax," and explains in her own way that it's an NJOY. In reality, Love's reply may fall flat.

Wall Street seems to like Facebook's phone more than they liked Graph Search. Facebook stock shot up by more than 3% on the day following Facebook's phone event, rising above $27 a share for the first time since mid-March. The stock had ticked up slightly this week in anticipation of the event and was trading at around $26.65 just before the event began.

Facebook has dropped its first ad for Home, which it is calling a "whole new experience for your phone." The 60-second ad above takes a page from Apple's playbook and presents Home as an un-scary technology that puts people first. Voiceover: "We carry our phones wherever we go. They're with us almost every second of the day. We reach for them when we have a free moment or we're curious.

Nokia Closes Shanghai Flagship Store, But Nobody Notices
Thursday, April 04, 2013 12:50 PMTech in Asia
On April 1, Nokia announced it's closing its flagship Nokia store in Shanghai, and this was no April Fools' joke. It’s the latest in a series of shutdowns of the phone-maker’s failing retail storefronts. The Shanghai store was its largest remaining shop. Unfortunately for Nokia, not many people really noticed or cared that the shop is closing.

Bloomberg announced Thursday that it is integrating Twitter feeds into its terminals, the real-time, financial data delivery systems found on the desks of Wall Street traders. The announcement follows the SEC's decision earlier this week that social media is now a valid platform for corporate disclosures, though it's likely the two companies began working on the integration at a much earlier date.

Thursday, April 04, 2013 9:50 AMSeth Fiegerman
Forget about being insanely great, Apple's plans for a new spaceship campus are becoming insanely expensive. Bloomberg Businessweek reports hearing from five sources close to the project that the budget for the new campus has surged from $3 billion when it was first proposed in 2011 to $5 billion now. That works out to be about $1,500 per square foot, according to Businessweek, which is more than most high-end office spaces.

'Harlem Shake' Hits 1 Billion Views in 40 Days
Thursday, April 04, 2013 9:15 AMTodd Wasserman
"Harlem Shake," the love-it-or-hate-it dance craze that swept the Internet earlier this year, has hit 1 billion views after just 40 days, according to researcher Visible Measures. As the company points out on its blog, "that's half the time 'Gangnam Style' took hit 1 billion views and almost a sixth of the time that it took 'Call Me Maybe.'" Unlike those videos, though "Harlem Shake" wasn't a single execution.
